Does Waterskiing Help You Stay in Shape for Ski Season

ski and snowboard in BarrieThe good thing about living in the Barrie area is you’re so close to skiing and snowboarding in the winter, while being close to lakes in the summer. That means, you can keep your skills sharp by waterskiing over the summer. But does this really work?

On the simplest level, waterskiing and wakeboarding are absolutely killer leg workouts. So, you can build/ maintain your leg strength. At the same time, you can burn as much as 617 calories in an hour of waterskiing. You can burn about 609 in an hour of downhill skiing

We probably don’t have to tell you this. Lots of snowboarders also own wakeboards, or at least know their way around one. At the same time, lots of downhill skiers swap the snow for the water over the summer.

There are obvious differences in techniques for going down a hill and being pulled behind a boat. But you might be amazed how transferable the skills are. Both involve weight shifts and lateral movements requiring balance, and a whole lot of pressure on your legs.

This isn’t to say snowboarders should expect to be rock stars on a wakeboard the first time they strap one on, or that skiers will immediately excel on the water. However, the odds are good you will pick it up much faster than the average person.

What do you think? We would love to hear from people in the Barrie area. Are you as comfortable on a ski hill as you are in the water?
